These King large-sized combination water stones are fired from aluminum oxide abrasive and carefully screened for consistant size mixed into a clay matrix. Use the 1000 grit side for coarse sharpening, and the 6000 grit side to give your edges a razor-sharp finish. Large size: 8-1/8" x 2-9/16" x 1-1/2". These King stones are manufactured from a variety of fused abrasives which create a porous, friable surface. This is important since, as the tool is rubbed on the stone, the particles of abrasive are rounded and dulled. Unfortunately with oil stones, the particles are tightly bound together, producing a dulled surface which greatly reduces cutting speed. On the other hand, the waterstones' porous, friable surface keeps fresh, sharp abrasive constantly exposed on the surface, thus accelerating and optimizing the cutting effect.
